Best Sound-Byte I’ve Heard This Month

I heard this driving in to work today:

“I am not an official of the United States and I am not bound by the diplomatic niceties. So I am going to speak an inconvenient truth. My own country, the United States, is principally responsible for obstructing progress here in Bali.” – Al Gore

It’s nice when people have the guts to say that, isn’t it? I heard another sound-byte from an Iowa republican woman who was pissed off at Huckabee for making jokes about the non-existence of global warming in his speech there. It’s not nearly fast enough, but the times are finally a-changing.

(More about Gore’s Bali speech here)

  1. Oh please please PLEASE Mr Gore, PLEEEEASE run for President. The world is depending on you!

  2. I know! The problem is, with that one single sentence, he pretty much eliminated himself from being able to ever win… there’s a whole chunk of the middle of the US who may eventually be convinved of global warming but will never ever vote for anyone who says something bad about America, no matter the context. Sad, really.

  3. It would be great if Gore ran, but then again he seems to have made more of a name for himself as a public spokesman. Maybe next time around. I don’t really like any of the current candidates, but just so long as we don’t end up with Romney or Huckabee I’ll be at least mildly relieved.

  4. Ugh…Huckabee makes me sick to my stomach. Really.

“I hope we answer the alarm clock and take this nation back for Christ.”

    Puke.

  5. One thing I am keen to see is less of a “special relationship” between the UK and the US. Blair allowed us to be effectively defined as “America’s Air Force carrier in the North Atlantic”. We followed the US into an illegal war that in no way could be defined as retaliation for 9/11 and we suffered for it on 7 July 2005.

So a president that is less keen to keep that “special relationship” (and maybe trying to have more interaction with the whole EU, or perhaps trying to build more bridges with Russia, because it’s scary what’s going on there) would be my vote. The one “good” thing about Romney from a British perspective is that he’s a Mormon, and we’re very much stuck in the Mormon=multiple wives stereotype. So we’ll do our nut at the thought of having a close political alliance with him!

But seriously, if I was voting I’d go for Edwards. I really really like the guy. I liked him back in 2004 and would have liked to see the Democrats run a Clarke-Edwards campaign, especially after Deano flipped out.
